REAL-WORLD GRAVEL AERO

Gravel races are fast, and aerodynamics really matters, but they’re not as fast as road races, so the demands are different. The OSTRO Gravel frame is meticulously optimized for the speeds you’ll be riding. Our team employed a “zoned aerodynamics” strategy, focusing the front of the bike on aerodynamics where it encounters clean or free airflow, and the rear of the bike on lightness, where the airflow is too chaotic and ride quality is the priority. Specifically, a lot of time was spent on the head tube, where a completely new tube shape significantly reduced drag by managing the “laminar separation bubble” occurring near the front of low-speed aerodynamic profiles. The technology is aerospace-based, but all you really need to know is that the OSTRO Gravel will get you to your finish line faster, by minutes, not seconds.

45 MM TIRE CLEARANCE

The OSTRO Gravel offers a generous 45 mm clearance for 700c and 650b tires, providing you with the options and possibilities to tackle the toughest routes and events. This is a real figure, with 4 mm clearance on each side in accordance with ISO standards, ensuring the OSTRO Gravel performs exceptionally well in muddy conditions. This was proven at the queen of gravel races, the Unbound 200 2022, where heavy rain made the course brutal, and the OSTRO Gravel finished in the top 10.

BLACK INC THIRTY FOUR CARBON GRAVEL WHEELS

The new Black Inc THIRTY FOUR wheels are - like the OSTRO Gravel itself - dedicated to speed on gravel. Their 34 mm depth maximizes aerodynamic gains while keeping weight to a minimum and avoiding an overly high combined rim and tire side area, thus ensuring stability in crosswinds. They are more aerodynamic with a 32 mm tire for off-road use but also very effective with gravel tires up to 43 mm. The 25 mm internal width allows larger tires to take a better shape. The hookless rim is designed to make tubeless tire mounting easier, often with just a regular floor pump. The rim includes a secondary shoulder that keeps the tire well in place in case of rapid deflation, allowing for a controlled stop. Black Inc hubs operate on CeramicSpeed bearings for ultimate efficiency.

BLACK INC INTEGRATED AERODYNAMIC STEM

Aerodynamics and ergonomics: the Black Inc Integrated Aero handlebar propels both to new heights, as riding far and riding fast are not mutually exclusive. Its mid-height aerodynamic profile is the result of relentless research and development, first using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), then prototype testing in the wind tunnel. The result is that it outperforms major aerodynamic road bar brands with exceptionally low weight. Additionally, it is as comfortable as it is fast, thanks to highly refined ergonomics that offer more rear sweep for a natural wrist angle on the tops, more wrist clearance and hand positions thanks to beveled corners, a drop shape that considers the length of the latest Shimano and SRAM shift levers, and a 7-degree flare starting below the shifter mount. The flare adds 3 cm of width in the drops, a carefully judged figure to fit all applications as the integrated aerodynamic stem is designed to pull double duty for both the OSTRO Gravel and the OSTRO VAM. For gravel, enjoy the extra control from wider drops on descents; for road use, select your usual drop width and benefit from the much more aerodynamic position possible on narrower hoods. The new Aero integrated handlebar also features a GoPro-style computer mount, adding angle adjustment and a second, more supported mount for a lightweight or action camera.

OPTIMIZED STEERING GEOMETRY FOR ALL TIRE SIZES

Many all-terrain and gravel bikes struggle to offer effective and safe steering on both road and off-road, often resulting in an unsatisfactory compromise between smooth handling and modest tire clearance. The OSTRO Gravel breaks this mold by making tire size an integral part of the geometry. Wider tires also have a larger outer diameter (or rolling circumference), which increases the actual trail or “resultant” of a bike; narrower tires have a smaller outer diameter, which reduces the resultant trail. These results match the handling response you want when riding these respective tires, which is why we designed with the resultant trail as a priority. We chose a slightly faster trail value for gravel use, considering the race orientation of the bike, while prioritizing the head tube angle when selecting our fork angle. This results in a gravel bike that is quick to handle on 43 mm tires and an equally satisfying and precise all-terrain machine on 32 mm tires, with no wheel flop at low speeds.

Leveraging our in-house carbon expertise, we’ve precisely shaped the tubes of the OSTRO Gravel to create a bike optimized with enhanced performance characteristics. The head tube has received a completely new shape compared to the road OSTRO VAM to improve its aerodynamic properties at gravel speeds. The rest of the frame uses the proven tube profiles of the OSTRO VAM, delivering both lively performance and aerodynamic efficiency.

ELECTRONIC SHIFTING AND DISC BRAKES ONLY

In line with rider demand and to facilitate reduced aerodynamic drag and weight, the OSTRO Gravel is designed exclusively for electronic shifting groups and disc brakes. Cable and hose routing is fully internal.
